Hello! I'm new to this forum. Just thought you guys might be able to help me out. Anways, I'm trying to design an album cover. I have a few questions:
1. What are the dimentions of a cd cover? (something like 4.23" x 4.715" ?)
2. What resolution should I start the design at? (if i begin at 72dpi, can I later bump it up to about 300dpi for print?)
3. Should I begin designing in RGB? (can later be converted to CMYK?)
I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks a bunch! |

It's better to start at 300 dpi as you can't successfully 'bump it up' from 72 to dpi.
Find out from the printing shop what profile they use. It could be, for CD cover Euroscale Coated v2. (Edit> Preferences> Color Sttings) if it is to be printed on glossy stock.
Work in RGB using View>Proof Setup>Working CYMK. This will let you see what the finished job will look like.
Don't be tempted to use a straight conversion from RGB to CYMK
When you are ready for output go to Image>Mode>Assign Profile. Make sure Euroscale Coated v2 or what ever profile the printer askes for, is checked then save as tiff format (I seldom use jpeg) Click OK.
There are a few other factors that govern 'true' finished printed colors, like monitor and scanner settings. There are many tutorials on the web covering this topic.
The best of luck
