cannot double click the layer to open layer style window

i double click my layer (its a text) and it just select the text and the window doesnt appear what do i have to do

Double clicking the layer makes a selection around the text...if you want to add a style you need to go down to the bottom of the layer pallete and pick the first icon (a black circle with a F in it)
It will add a style to the layer.

Or
right click on the layer and choose 'Blending Options'

or
choose 'layer' from top menu then 'layer style'.
