Using Photoshop 7

Every time I try to use the brightness/contrast feature, the eyedropper comes up instead. It also locks this feature where I can't get out of it, though occasionally hitting Esc repeatedly, gets me out, but usually I have to use the Task Manager to exit the program. I tried resetting all the tools and I even tried to uninstall and reinstall the program but it still does it. The last time I opened photoshop before all this happened it downloaded some updates at the start, but I am not sure what the problem is. The only other thing that has been going on for weeks now, the Text tool is hung up on making a huge line about 4 in. long, like the font size is going to be huge, but there is no visible text when typed, though it shows there is in the
little task window to the side, it is just not visible on the image being edited. This also does not respond to resetting the tools.

Thanks,

George
