i have seen a black and white photo with parts of the photo masked back to the ordinary colour.
eg. the picture is all black and white but the hair and clothes back to colour.
can you help with step by steps

There are many ways...an easy way is to make a blank layer above your colored picture and set the mode to saturation, then paint whatever you want B/W with any gray brush.
Another easy way is to desaturate the original colored picture.
(Image / adjustment / desaturate) then click the history brush (beside the clone tool) and paint over what ever you want to see in color.

My way is to duplicate the background layer (layer duplicate) image desaturate the top dup layer and use the eraiser tool on the bits you want coloured (your just wiping away the B+W layer on top) Wayne |
