First and foremost, hello there! Just joined this forum.
I am hoping that someone would be willing to break something down for me. I'm taking classes in graphic arts technology and having a hard time understanding transparencies in channels. My entire class is having to learn on Macs when we all have PCs......and some of the shortcut combinations will not do the same thing for us when we convert them to PC ones. Ex: to load two seperate channels at once on a mac we command click on the channels names (they both stay active)...on a PC, command clicking converts to control clicking or alt clicking but it does not keep more than a layer at a time active.
I apologize if this is a long winded explaination. I failed my midterm and am averaging a low C because of this problem.
I'm going to include the actual picture we had to work on for our midterm in hopes that anyone here would be willing to help me out.
The object is to use the lasso tool & channels to select all parts of the picture (except the background) & then to paste it onto another background w/the glass transparent in the areas it would be.
Thank you for taking your time to read this. Really desperate here.

I'm not sure how to go about the wine glass bit, mostly because the glass seems to be reflecting a background behind the camera. It doesn't appear completely trasparent to me. You can see the background in front of the camera through the glass, but only in the shape of the landscape background behind the camera. Does your teacher want you to keep that treeline in the glass? Either way, I don't know much about channels so I won't be much help.
However, If you want to select more than one channel at a time try Shift+Clicking.

its control click for most macs to do stuff.....
however i've found that when i moved ... made hte great decision to leave petty pc's behind hat almost all shortcuts are merely "apple" instead of your command or crtl key... They shortcuts should be pretty much the same

Did your professor show an example image of what he/she expects?
It would be nice to know what you are aiming for.
And while I can understand the lasso tool(though I would instead use color range or the magic wand-w key or even filter>extract), I can't really see why you would use channels???
If anything I would use channels for masking, but that defeats the purpose of the lasso tool..doesn't it? Then again, maybe using the lasso tool in the green channel layer might be eaiser to separate the background from the foreground. But it's not really worth it if you could do the same thing in your normal layer.
Hmm.. I know there is something I'm missing here.. but I can't place my finger on it.

It's possible and a fairly standard (if complex) masking job, with a couple of adjustment layers.
Removing the backgound is the easy part, the tough part is going to be desaturating the colours in the glass so that it can be situtated in a new scene, a few adj. layers should do the trick. Then the only fly in the ointment is the clear image of trees (look like poplar trees to me) that won't be able to be removed.
As for the lasso tool, I would steer clear and use the pen tool and layer masks.

Weve learned every selection tool in Photoshop but my teacher prefers to use the lasso tool and channels (he thinks that makes the best selections & w/channels they retain the selections in case we need to go back and correct or change something later) I like quick masks better because I do a lot of digital painting but I guess it would probably be my best bet to learn this way too. Besides, I have no idea how to do transparencies without messing w/blend modes w/quick masks anyway. lol
But okay, I could kick myself right now for not trying out the shift clicking on multiple channels to activate more than one at once. It totally worked! So thank you thank you thank you! One step in the right direction.
Going to try the entire picture again. Will let u all know if it works out.
