Hey everyone, new here.
Just got CS2 and I ran into a big problem with Photoshop and others. For example, when I run photoshop it consistantly uses all the CPU power which makes the program unusable. It freezes for about 10 minutes before I can click on something else, and when i finally click on something else it waits forever to do anything period. I was looking at the system requirements for it and my specs are there and better than whats required, but they only suggest Intel chips now -
is it possible that Adobe isn't optimizing (or caring for) AMD chips much anymore? People i've spoken to with Intel's didn't have this issue, but those i've spoken with that have AMD's have the same problems I have - anyone else experience this?
Sorry if there's another or tons more topics on this - just really frustrated right now because I can't use the program at all - waste of credit card space right now

I have an AMd 64 4000+ and ive used photoshop 6.0, 7.0, and cs and now cs2

Got an AMD AthlonXP 1.5Ghz - I do have thousands and thousands of Font's which is the reason why Photoshop takes forever to load - which is fine, but as far as draing the CPU, i dont think it would have anything to do with that.

I dont really know then, sorry, i think you should seriouslty take into condieration buying a new cpu though, as the one you have, is going to seriously struggle with new versions of photoshop coming out, aswell as most new programs that come out and involve alot of ram _________________ www.jerseyhacker.co.uk

Hmmmm....I believe that's it. Your fonts. More on that in a minute. I have a 1.53 AMD w/512 mb ddr ram, and it runs Photoshop CS fine and dandy. At work I have intel P4, and that works fine too.
I believe that your problem is your fonts. Despite popular belief, Windows doesn't like having to many fonts. Now, if Windows has to many fonts, it'll slow to a crawl, specially when Windows is trying to run another program (photoshop, although windows doesn't "run" it, Photohsop is running on a windows based OS), then photoshop will also crawl. You'll notice that when you start photoshop, it says "sorting fonts", and that's when it'll load all the font's to use with photoshop. However, Windows still wants to use those fonts, so their in Windows memory too, along with photoshop, along with both programs still trying to fight for memory.
I have run into that same problem, where I start photoshop and it just spanks my computer. I had roughly 1,500 font's on my computer. I uninstalled about 1,000 fonts, and the problem went away.
Also, check your settings at start up. Photoshop has a certain amount of ram it'll use, and windows takes what it can get. If they conflict with each other, trying to use the same memory, then that'll cause problems too.

well first off, thanx to the both of you for taking some time to help me out with my problem.
Well i do have quite a large number fonts on my computer (about 10,000) What ill do is try that out - ill take those fonts (about the vast majority of them) and put them in a different folder and see what happens.
But how come PS has that problem? I've used Paint Shop Pro, Fireworks (i know Both arent as great as PS) but they dont have an issue with loading the fonts. I barely use those, if at all, but just curious

WOW! With that many fonts, I'm suprised that Windows runs at all! If I were you, I'd limit the amount of fonts on my computer to no more than 500. Just keep the other ones on a disk, or external hard drive and use them when u need them and uninstall them when you're done. Just keep the ones that you use the most loaded and NEVER bother with keeping fonts that are designs or symbols instead of actual letters.
As far as Photoshop having a problem with all the fonts, it's just a guess, well, an educated guess seeing as how I've had similar problems and found the cure. I do hope that it helps you out though. If not, be sure to post back. well i removed quite a few fonts - down to about 2500 - the program loaded faster (as i figured it would) and the program actually ran. But, i was gettin errors stating that it was a program error so it couldn't save the file, etc..
but it still has a habit of using the full CPU power here and there. And sometimes it tells me it couldn't save the file because there wasnt enough RAM, when there was over 300mb's free.
I'm going to reinstall PS with the hopes that these errors will go away. Otherwise ill just head back to CS 1

And the reinstall took care of those errors - but it stil drains the CPU and slows the app down, while being slightly workable - you think that the 2500 fonts are still causing this? Some fonts on certain windows/apps are displaying a different font and/or messed up characters since I deleted their associated font file. I'd hate to chance anymore missing fonts.
If I remember correctly, you should be able to uninstall them from windows, which should take care of them messing up other apps. Find the font folder then right click and choose uninstall (I think that's right).\
