Hi, everyone.
I'm relatively new to Photoshop. I'm going through an online tutorial course and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, but I need help with something. I'm interested in working with high-contrast black & white images but there's a couple of things I'm not sure how to do.
First, I want to be able to increase the shadows or highlights around the edge of an object or person. I want to make those shadows and highlights longer. How can I do that? I'm guessing maybe it has something to do with dodging and burning, but I feel like there's more to it than that or there's a better way altogether.
Second, I want to reduce my images to JUST those shadows or highlights by painting out everything else, but since black hides and white reveals, I end up doing things I don't want to do to my images when I try to paint with black or white. How does one paint with black or white in Photoshop without hiding pixels they don't want hidden or revealing pixels they don't want revealed?
Anyone know a good tutorial on either of those problems? Thanks, everyone. |

Hi GrayArea, welcome to the forums.
Regarding your first question you can try playing around with the edge glow option in HDR Toning (Image/Adjustments/HDR Toning). Make sure the method is set to local adaptation.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean with your second question. Could you post an example? |

Hey, Frank. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still playing around with it, but it looks like that might work.
As for the second question, I think I might have that figured out. It's a long story and I don't think I remember it all.
Thanks again. |
