What is the easiest way to make a photograph into a square?

I'm working on my Photography site and I'm at the gallery pages. I want them to be setup in a grid and all of the photo thumbnails to be squares so it looks uniform (then when you click it, the full photo shows up). I know I can crop it to a square, etc. but I want to add a stroke to it as well. Is there an easy way to do this because I also want to be able to choose what part of the photo is in the square.
