Unable to replace color, please help.

Newbie here...

I would like to change the white logo to different colors (without changing the black background) to find out which color I like best. But when I go to Replace Color, I make the selection and it won't change to any other color. Using the paint bucket is tough because the head in the middle is tough to fill out perfectly.

When I open the file in photoshop, I make sure I'm in RGB mode, so I don't think that's the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Add a solid colour adjustment layer and set the blend mode of the layer to darken.
