I am a newbie to layering in PS5. i just figured out this morning that as i mask only the parts of the pic that i manipulate, then i can pick and choose which layers i want active therefore saving the integrity of the rest of the picture.
But after a certain point, i need to make adjustments that cover large areas or areas already masked and then i loose my ability to a-la-carte my layers.

is there an easier way to do this with out masking? is there a simple linking thing to layers that i am missing?

in my attached example, i can give my "client", actually fiance, lol, the option of changes in either layer 1 AND/OR layer 2, but layer 3 has to involve covering work done in layer 2, thus i loose that a-la-cart freedom i am looking for. making a copy of layer 2 and masking only the lower right hand for adjustments will give me desired effect, but if i dont want layer 2 anymore then i have run into a brick wall.

so again, i am either stuck with this method or is there something in layering that i am missing?

well, my photoshop file is too large to include.... rats.....
resized image, file fits now

I'm not sure I understand the question

You want to give someone the choice of using layer 1 or layer 2 along with the background layer?

You can combine (flatten) Layer 3 and the background or you could create a new layer that combines Layer 3 and the background.
