Hello everyone!
I'm new to the forums, and to graphic design as well.

I'm looking to start designing websites in my city and since I already know the programming, all I need is the graphic part.

Knowing the ammount of tutorials that are out there, it's a bit overwhelming for a newbie. So what I ask is just a few tips, books or tutorials for people like me.

What's the first thing I need to make web layouts, logos and what not.

Well, that's about it for now, hope to be more active around here, and thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome!

I would personally avoid anything Flash-based for various reasons (lack of iOS support, etc.).

What is it about designing graphics you need to know? Technical details about file preparation or the design aspects? Both topics should be covered in great detail on the web (here's but one resource out of many: http://www.designtalkboard.com/forum/forum-home.php).

Personally I would recommend using Adobe Fireworks. There are alot less tutorials to grind through, and most of them will be specific to exactly what you are doing. Also you are learning a workflow that can be ported back into photoshop if you want some expanded functionallity.

Let me know if you are running into some specific problems I would be happy to help

I would advise you not to use Fireworks. Adobe will not be making any new versions and it will soon be phased out. A lot of the features of Fireworks are now included in Photoshop.

You should start with some tutorials so you can get used to the program.
Such as,

After you feel comfortable, you should start designing things on your own. Just like with code, a lot of this must be learned through practice.

Good luck :)
