tis a good question, and one that i have not been able to figure out as of yet. the best that i can tell so far is this, trial and error until you hit the 500kb mark. hopefully, someone with way more knowledge (and that want take much as i am a noob as well) will answer this for the both of us.

well i actually figured out one way, buts a big pain
move the image over to imageready and open the resize box, in imageready it gives the current filesize and new filesize. and you are able to size it down by percent so if you do the math right; all you need to know is the percent do shrink it by

The easiest way to this has to be this:
During the Save For Web-dialog (or in ImageReady) you're able to choose "Optimize for File Size".
Here you're able to enter your file size-target, and the programs tries to hit that file size using the best possible settings.
The "Optimize for File Size" is located in the options-flyout next to the Presets-dropdown.

Hope this helps.
