Hello there,

i am fairly new to Photoshop and very new to this forum.

I have a very specific question about the merge function. I have several independent layers on my pallette. I am using an unlocked black background as my bottom layer and have created various shapes on the other layers. These shapes are actually cut out shapes (negative spaces). I have made them this way so that when i merge them with the black layer they will form a 'cut out'. Therefore being able to see something behind the black layer (which is another multi-coloured layer).

I think I'm making it sound more complicated than it actually is, but basically it's just like those pictures you did at school, where you draw crayon all over the page and then paint black on the top and then scratch of different shapes to get a colourful line effect.

The problem is, is that when I Merge the negative spaces with the black back-drop, they are no longer negative-but just outlines of the previous negative space. I try to select the area with the magic wand and then cut it out, but it doesn't like that.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Skojak
