I want to know how to extract the white in a black & white photo to create something like the pictures inside ofg the Sound of Music booklet, illustrated on my blog:

http://squiddlydiddly.tumblr.com/

I tried for a while to search for tutorials and forums about this, but couldn't find anything useable. Which seems odd as it is a perfectly normal thing to want to do, when you work in design or photography. Maybe I just couldn't find the right words.

Anyways, please let me know if you have any tips to this. What I don't need is suggestions to use treshold or anything, I simply wanna take away all the white in a black and white photo, in order to retain the black and put a colored background behind it. Thanks a lot!

for the most part this is something that requires using the magic wand tool and paying close attention and using the lasso too and plus/minus

if you need more help, just let me know .... I just wanted to make sure you knew someone was looking at your post

Hi Jheim,

Your best bet would be the Color Range command, accessed by right clicking to reveal the option when using the marquee tools. Use the eyedropper to select white and optimize it with the fuzziness slider.
