Hi... I'm not new to Photoshop but I haven't made any substantial use of it in years. I've done some searching and found some decent info here on Photomerge but most of it points to the fact that the easiest merges are done on well scanned items. Like liquid paint, it's all in the prep work.

I'm trying to scan a pinball playfield. Perfectly flat piece of plywood covered in silkscreened art. I have scanned it in 12 good sections. I understand using 50% opacity on a layer to line up the overlapping sections, then using difference mode to ensure it is perfect. My problem is rotation. Physical scans being what they are, the alignments aren't 100% perfect, and no matter what I do I can't get the rotation right so the difference mode goes fully black.

This leads me back to the prep work. What can I do better to ensure the scans are 100% aligned and eliminate the need to rotate? I'm scanning with the scanner upside down and used a framing speed square to get the alignments as close as possible.

Thanks for any advice... I appreciate your time.
