|
|
Hey there- I have a very specific question about layer masks.
Normally when I need to add a gradient layer mask to a photo, I select the layer, add a layer mask and use the gradient tool to create a "loose" gradient blend.
However, I'm interested in creating a very specific gradient layer mask that spans the length of the mask top to bottom (not "loose" as the gradient tool produces). Is there a way to fill the layer mask with a gradient while NOT using the gradient tool, perhaps filling the mask with the paint bucket?
Thanks! Any help is appreciated! |

I don't quite understand why unless you are looking for precise repeatabilty?
The only thing I can think of is to make a new layer and apply the B&W gradient to it. Then select it all and save it as a pattern ( Edit-define pattern.)
Then for the layer mask, Edit-fill and select the gradient pattern. Of course for this to work the image would need to be the same size as the pattern. If the image is larger the pattern will repeat itself. |

Thanks!
Yes, repeatability is key for me. I do a lot of actionscript work and the images we normally import have utilitarian purposes, for example a print or save icon. If i can find ways to automate photoshop manipulation processes, i will. Here's an update from the process mentioned above.
If I create the gradient and save it as a pattern, then select the photo i wish to mask, create layer mask and use the fill method from above. This successfully fills the layer mask with the gradient pattern i created. I can further manage the layer mask within the Masks panel. Nice! |
