Hi there,
I came across this image a while ago and would really like to know how to achieve the cxf lettering style. Also, how would I end up with an image that doesn't include the white border underneath the lettering (can't see it against the white background) so the border isn't just a straight edge. I'm pretty new to Photoshop, so I'll take all the help I can get. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. It looks to me like a drop shadow, found in the layer fx panel, just make sure that you choose a nice hard edge and the right angle. Combine it with a stroke or similar for the line along the bottom and that would be about it.
As for your second question, as you can see it is not against a white background in these forums and it is fine. I am guessing that your background layer is white and that you have that turned on. Turn it off or change the background colour to see.
Caveat: above only applies to GIF or PNG not a JPG as you have posted here.
