Okay so I am following a tutorial for making something else but the first step is creating clouds, which I have done by making a dark grey background, then making a new layer and using a lasso tool to make a cloud shape. I make the background the same dark grey and the foreground like half grey. I also used ALT to make it more defined, but the problem I am having is that the cloud edges look too sharp and contained. I want to follow the tutorial I am using but it doesn't really seem to show how to make the edges wispy and natural. Can someone help? Much appreciated!

Filter Render Clouds, then transform and blur.

Okay thank you now here's the thing; I opened photoshop this morning and went to use the lasso tool and try this again, and two things happened. One, the lasso seemed to automatically make my shape smoother after I drew it. Two, when I went to put clouds in, they were perfect! All wispy and smooth. I don't recall changing any settings so how is this possible? All I did was use the lasso on a dark grey background, and when I let go of it the shape shrunk a little and was really smooth and then the clouds were perfect. I'm sorry to be a bother but I want to understand what's happening here.

Look at the tool options at the top, likely the lasso tool is set to feather thereby giving you a less defined selection.
