I want to paint on soft light layer above the normal layer

However I can't figure out what is the most elegant way to restrict the area of paint to exactly match the area of drawing below.

One way to do it is to use magic wand tool, select the drawing on layer 1, create a new layer 2 above layer 1, set layer 2 to soft light and just paint with brush while the selection is still active.

The problem with magic wand tool is that it doesn't select a whole drawn object if it is complex shape and uses many colors. So what I want is a way to select everything on layer 1 that is not fully transparent. How do I do this? Or do you know even better way to solve my problem?


edit: I think I found one good way
create a new layer above layer 1 > right-click on it in layers list and select "create clipping mask" > set layer mode to soft light Big Wink
