Hey!

I have a black and white image. I would like to write on the image as follows:
if the background is white i would like the font to be black, vica-versa.
I think masking is needed but im not sure how to achive the required result.
thanks

This is easy. Forget the masks Big Wink
Just make this stack of layers(from top to bottom):

Your background layer with Blend if option set to This layer 128, 255, Difference mode
Your text layer - white, Normal mode
Black layer, Normal mode

It's not first step, it's the top layer with your background.
Double click the layer in the Layers panel, go to Blending options, to Blend If section and move the left triangle slider for This layer someplace to the right to exclude totaly black areas.
