Each letter of the font is on a different layer, I can merge them though. I don't know the best way to create the red background/border , can anyone give me any advice please?
I tried the outside stroke but that creates a background exactly around each letter but the bit above and below the 'uel' needs to be straight, so maybe I need to create a shape? Do I need to draw it or is there a way of creating some sort of mask?

Hi there,
The best way you could do this is, make a font layer, type what ever you want in it, then double click on the right hand side of the font layer and you'll enter Layer FX, go to the last option to the left called "Stroke" after you go into that option, change the px of the stroke to a bigger size of the stroke and change the colour to what ever you want, you'll see that the font has another background filled in it... : ) Simple
