PS CS5 - Novice User - I hope this is the correct Forum for this, if not please redirect for me - I normally take photos of Soldiers in front of a Standard Background. However, there are times when I have to photograph them elsewhere, with various complex backgrounds.
In these cases, I have extracted the images from the complex backgrounds and saved them on a White Background as a jpg image.
I need to place the bare image (no white background) onto an area of the Standard Background (jpg image), to make it appear the photo had been taken in front of the Standard Background.
Can someone please lay out the steps,in the correct order, to perform this task, as I do not follow uTube Tutorials too well.

hi,
welcome aboard... glad to see you...

and this board is fine for your questions...

as far as steps it fairly simple sometimes thought it in the details of additionals things to make the overall composite more realistic....

first be aware each image is diffferent and presents it own unique challenges sometime for the same goal you may need to use different tools and differnt technique... a little example there about 8 differents ways to change color and what works best on one image may not work best on another.... ook

note: a lot of time we generally like to see the image in question just for the above reasons... smiling..

basicc steps
1. making a good selection is very important... different ways to do it but a popular meathod is use your quick selection tool you don't need to be exact but fair...

2. at this point two choice you can take...
a. after quick selection then use the refine tool to clean up the quick selection..
b. different route is after you do the quicck selection
add mask
then do refine mask (basically using refine tool on the mask) many people like to this meathod..
3. then bring in your background... or visa versa...

that the basics
now here some tutorials
1. this is a good video tutorial on using the refine edge tool http://www.psdisasters.com/2011/06/tutorial-hot-hair-mess-with-sean.html
2 this is a graphic/text tutorial on the quick selection tool
http://www.photoshopessentials.com/basics/selections/quick-selection-tool/

this is a very good video on selection and mask
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-russell-brown-show/advanced-masking-with-photoshop-cs5/

now there is nother possible issues in making your composite realistic... may time when you past a object onto a background it it sort of looks pasted... could be the edgest look too sharp in case like that I like to you blur tool to lightly blur the image...

another possible issue is the backround maybe grainy and the pasted object is too clear, you may need to add a little graininess to the object to make it look more realistic... and sometimes the color tonality is different and you use a variety of techniques to equalize them.... as you can see there maybe a lot of different issues on a composite and it depends a lot on the objsts on which technique to use....

sidelite... my self i most of the video tutorials on utube i don't like.... the ones at russel brown are very good, also one at mark wilson are very good and a few others....

let me know if this is helpfull and what other questions /help/assistance we can help you with..

Hi jerryb4417, thank you for this info, I will keep trying to get what I want. At this time I have extracted the image I need. Current problem is: When I Place it on the Standard Background, the Image appears on a big block of White Background. Question her is: How to get rid of this White Background. so that the final result looks as though, he was photographed in fromt of the Standard Background.
My Photos are too large to upload for you to look at.

hi,
i don't how your transferring the selection to the background i''ll just address one way...

now... when you make the selection, you do a copy

if you then open up your new background image and then do a paste... you should now see new layer (the layer itself will be transparent ) with the selection .... and you should also see that new baqckground... that should be it...

on this white background by any chance did you save that selection as a jpg file???? enven though your selection should have transparent background if saved as a jpg that background will be white.... maybe that what happening...

Thank you jerryb4417, This is what I ended up doing with success.
Photo Processing – Photoshop CS5
A) Extract Image from Background.

1. Open Photo for Extraction.
2. Use Quick Selection Tool. Mark out portion of the Image you wish to Extract. Alt Key can be used with mouse to tidy up selection.
3. Go to Refine Edge – Select White Background, Adjust and Clean Up Image.
4. Press OK
5. Save Image as .jpg format.

B) Convert the Image to a Transparent Background.

1. Open the Extracted Image.
2. Select Image - Ctrl + A
3. Copy Image – Ctrl + C
4. Go File > New – Insert Name of Image, select Background as Transparent, OK.
5. Paste Image – Ctrl + V
6. Choose Lasso Tool, Magnetic or Polygon, work around Image you need.
7. Go to Select > Inverse – Shift + Ctrl + I
8. Press Delete Key.
9. Go to Select > Deselect – Ctrl + D
10. Zoom in close to edges of Image.
11. Use Eraser Tool to clean up edges for a better end product.
12. Save As, the Image as PSD format, which will remove white background.

C) Add Transparent Background Image to another Image.

1. Open Background Image.
2. Go to File > Place. This will Place the selected Image onto the Background.
3. Adjust imported image to its final size and position.
4. Save As, completed new combined Image as .jpg format.

Hoping this will help someone else who cannot follow Photoshop built in Help.
I have tried to add a Finished Image as an attachment to show results.

hi,
remember lot of different ways to do get the same results....

for example... when you made the selectioof the guy... now you have the new layer with the mask

well just open the other image where you have bot image showing well just take the move tool then just click and drage that selection to the other image... that save all those steps in step B

you could also have save just that selection layer of the guy and save it as a png, and then you could your your "place" to import tht image ...

note png retains transparency
