In photoshop CS5, when i select an area using the marquee tool, and press delete, a fill box comes and asks me to fill the area with different options [just like a normal fill box does], this i suppose is a new feature. How can i disable it and make photoshop behave just like old way, that is pressing the delete button just clears up the area, without any popup boxes.?

I read on the net and found that pressing ctrl while deleting makes the action the way it used to be in older versions. But i want the delete key to behave just like it used to. some registry hack must be there...isn't it?

hi,
did some experimenting to reproduce the issue your having...

i don't think there a preference setting to address the issue.. this what i found...
1. this occurrs when your working on the background locked layer ....!!

2. now a couple of ways to get around it ...

a. dup the background layer and work off the dup.... this is something i do myself as part of my normal work flow....

b. or just unlock the back ground layer ......double click on the background layer and when window come up just click ok!! that will unlock the layer...
now your able to use your tool and delete..

hi thehermit,

thank you.... i always learn something by answering...

been playing further wth this post...

i found that with the locked background layer
i can go to the edit>cut and it will delete the selection but you don't get that transparent checkerboard pattern, what is left is a solid color of whatever you background color is set to...

another thing i am looking at, and not sure if there a answere other than that the way it designed is why when you do hit the del buton on a background locked layer why the default is the "fill " windows that comes up..... i was wonder if the default could be change.... not sure if there would be advantage to changing that defaults but i was just curious..... smiling....
