I have been trying to select the sweatshirt in the photo with the lasso tool, I have deleted the background but unfortunately I cannot seem to select the sweatshirt every time I try to select it seems to select one part of the sweatshirt and another part of the background. Here is an example:

When I try to use the magnetic tool, the lines go inside of my sweatshirt. How can I select the shape of my sweatshirt ONLY without selecting other background shapes? [/img]

hi,
ok... here we go plus they'll be some tips at the end..
1. first of all in the example you have the magic wand selected ... plus it set for a tolerence of 40 that pretty large , and you will likely get a lot of unwanted areas selected, try going to something great deal less if your going to use the wand..

also looks like your selecting outside of the shirt not inside...look where the dancing ants are,, that not a big issue... many time we select a background then do a select> inverse, in order to get the object we want selected...

2. now if using the magnetic lasso ... I don't know what numbers you have but if there large go to smaller numbers.... and don't be fearfull to zoom in.. to get your tool on or near that edge...

tips ...
1. not unusal to to over or under select... what i sometimes do will be that once i have the selection and i need to refine/clean up alittle bit more... i will click on the "quick mask mode" at the bottom of the tool box ..now there with the brush i can clean up the edges using black to hide and white to reveal... when go out of the mask mode you fine the selection has readjusted itself...
2. I always like to make a dupe of the orginal layer and work off that layer...
again make your selection but this time , on the layer pallet, click "add layer mask ... now at this point can use a black/white brush and on the maske clean up your edgest or the over/under selection ....
3. with magic wand.. when you have over selection, and your setting are ok,,, by pressing the alt key (the substract button at top, you can de-select unwanted area with your wand ...
4. just remember there other way.... like channel masking to make a selection but with this shirt .. smmiling that might not work to well ... but yo always want to be aware of different ways... in order to use the best one for a image..

So. bosstez, how did that real world example of black and white jumper needing to be extracted from 'space' occur? Where is the source image from?

It's a sweatshirt and the source photo I found on tumblr, but the sweatshirt is my friends design. ;-)

Thanks alot, I'm just still confused as far as the magic wand tool is concerned though. I selected smaller numbers with the magic wand tool but still it only selected the wrong parts, or small parts?

Finally I just tried to use the magnetic lasso tool and like you suggested(thank you!) I lowered the numbers and it worked like a charm. I'm just still a little confused as far as the magic wand tool.

Edit: Now it seems the magnetic tool is curving in.

hi,
although tutorial make things looks easy and perfect, because the image specailly selected to be easy, many times though you sometimes have to some cleaning up afterwards... things are not perfect...

many times when using the magnet lasso or one of the other selection tools i will do a quick mask take care of the discrepency aqnd then go back to normal mode.. and hopefully any discrepencies are gone...

I notice there is sort of a 1 pxel halo around most of the tshirt... sometimes i'll shrink the selection 1 pixel to try to eliminate the halo and maybe smooth the edge alittle...

i was wondering... after the selection have your tried using the refine edge tool?
