I am having trouble removing the checkered background from these images while keeping the icons transparent and as a solid color (no checkered background). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi,
keep in mind i am assuming that checkboard pattern is NOT the photoshop transparent checkboard pattern...

there different ways to eliminate the background pattern...
this is one which works well... and it uses a form of channel masking ...
i chose the image that has the white icons...

1. make a dup layer... and turn off the background layer
2. go to layer pallet ... and make a dup of a channel that give the greatest contrast... in this case there all the same and i picked blue channel
3. now i usee levels to darken everything.... to nice black ... only thing that not darken is thw white's ..
4. then i click the load as selection ,,,
5. then i went back to my reg layer....
note: now you may need to do a inverse selection...

now at this point inverse selection to only the checkerboard pattern shows it selected and click delete... that it.... now there other ways that may ormay not be better but this is just one...

i have included a trasparent png... i changed the white objects to black just so they show up better for the sample image...
