Is there an easier way of creating a pure white background behind a subject other than creating a white layer and erasing the white off the subject?

hi,
there a lot of different ways to replace a background and sometimes it depends on the image what the best way....

a popular meathod is create a mask to hide what you don't want shown and then put in your fill layer...

for the selection... you can use channel masking techniques like this
http://ebin.wordpress.com/2007/05/24/quick-way-to-remove-background-without-using-lasso-tool-in-photoshop/

or depending on your version photoshop you make a rough selection and use the refine edge tool ... and there other ways...
