Hey all,
Can anyone please take a look here http://jarabic.co.uk/house
I want this house image to be the background for a web page. In the middle of the image will go various text (ie different web page, different text). In order to make this text more readable, I want to fade this central area of the image where the text will go, maybe using opacity. So I created a mask = the outer area of the image is 100% opacity, while the inner area of the image is 20% opacity. But reducing the opacity seems to have the unwanted side effect of creating a grey film or box.
I want to say 'fade the selected area' but it seems that I am saying 'turn the selected area grey'. If I use say 50% opacity instead of 20%, the unwanted side effect is less strong but basically the same.
In the 'Marrakech' image, the face fades but there is no box / film. Maybe my problem is that my faded area layer needs some kind of layer beneath it but I am not sure what.
Any suggestions please?
Thank you

The page showing your image is not available, so can't see it. But I'm guessing that the layer beneath the transparency is grey.
If you make something transparent, it's going to show whatever is on the layers beneath it. If you don't want it grey, then put a layer underneath it with whatever colour you do want (e.g white, or perhaps some colour which also appears in the image).
Hope that's what you were after.

Ok thanks - at the moment there is no layer underneath the low opacity layer, so I am not sure where the grey is coming from. I think that any colour layer I put underneath will create an unwanted box effect ie a sharp edged box shape in that colour.
I want to fade the central area but without creating a box shape but maybe that is not possible.
Thanks...

One good way is to use a layer mask.
Paint on the layer mask where you want the transparency to be, then adjust the feathering and density using the masks panel (if you like).
- Paint on the mask in black to hide, white to show.
- If you use a big soft brush at a low opacity, you can paint in black to gradually fade out areas that you don't want.
- If you use a gradient (circular one might suit you), you can make gradual transitions.
- If you use a gradient and want to keep "adding", change the mode from "normal" to "multiply".
Hope that helps.
