|

I'm working on a collage and when I bring in a photo and want to get rid of the hard edges I use a layer mask with the black to white gradient. Many times I need to smooth more than just one side of a picture and love the natural effect that the gradient masks do. Is there a way to apply multiple gradient masks on a picture using a single mask?

Do you mean you would like to use the gradient tool on your layer mask for each side of the image, since every time you draw the gradient on the edge of an image the previous gradient disappears? You may have to use a selection for each edge, and use the gradient tool inside the selection (of course on the mask) or use a square paint brush on the mask, holding down shift as you paint to keep it straight.
Hope that is what you meant!

watersole, thanks for the reply. I believe I've found my answer already.
Yes I would like to apply the gradient mask to each side. This can be done by changing the blending mode so that each gradient "swipe" gets added to the layer mask. Changing the blending mode to "multiply" accomplishes this.

I've been trying to create that effect forever, and even my Photoshop teacher didn't know how when I asked her!

For more than one gradient on a layer you should use the transparent to colour gradient.

This is quite easy to do:
1) make a layer mask to you picture
2) inside that mask make your first gradient
and now is the fun part:
3) create a new folder
4) move your pic and linked mask to that folder
5) apply a layer mask to that folder (group)
6) you're now ready to add as many gradients as you like
Have fun!!
