hi there.. im using cs5 ps . and would like to know about some steps to take in simply making a nice photo to look as much like an oil painting because i want to get it put to boxed canvas for my mother for her birthday ..

Hi mobile04 and welcome to the forum.

I would use the following tutorial Oil Painting Tutorial No need to add a canvas texture as you indicate that's the medium you are printing in.

well my 2 cents worth..
there so many techniques , very subtle or various obvious or combine oil with a particulare style of painting....

now you may want to take a look at the free plug in and see if you can use it... http://www.mcpactions.com/blog/2010/11/11/turn-your-photo-into-an-oil-painting-in-photoshop-cs5/ in fact i''l probabludownload this my self...

if your interested in that one you might look at the tutorial for that plugin.. it a good tutorial by russel brown.....
