Just got hold of invaluable scans of old documents. They have a heavy parchment background and are badly water stained. I want to manipulate the image the best I can, to be able to best read what writing is decipherable.
See attached typical image.
These are the only and best images I have and need to work with them.
I just get by with photoshop 7.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please.
What tactic should I use to lighten the background and heighten the contrast with the ink writing?

Welcome to the forum Tony.
It's going to be a case of using multiple curve adjustment layers targeted carefully. You perhaps could get away with a cheeky use of multiple layers set to a blending mode such as Multiply, but that would be a quick and dirty solution.
I would cruise the channels as a matter of course to see if good information is stored in any of them, and I would convert to multiple colour spaces to check the channels.
There is a case for "you can't polish a ...." depending upon the resolution and the actual data that is remaining you may only ever get a partial result.
You could try mixing your channels to produce a better result, without looking at the image it's obvious that most inks are made of blue or black pigments, applying the blue and the green channels could give the ink a little more 'oomph'.
Perhaps a calculations command too could help in part, I have a feeling it's going to be a combination of a few techniques.
