I was living a happy man, doing my photoshopping without knowing anything about layer comps then I discovered them and tried to learn about them, followed the help file steps precisely but did not get the right outcome. What am I doing wrong here
1) Opened a PSD file containing layered work
2) In the Layers Comp panel, I pressed the "create new layer comp" button
3) I gave it a name and checked the visibility, position and appearance boxes
4) I made the last document state visible
5) Made a few changes to the layers, like content and order
6) I Made the layer comp I created in step 2 visible
BUT THE LAYERS REMAIN AS IS, THEY DO NOT RETURN TO THE STATE THEY WERE IN WHEN THE COMP WAS CREATED!!!
Why you might ask do I need layer comps if layer folders can do the same job? Actually I need them to be able to use sitegrinder.
I am working on PS CS4, I hope that 's not the problem
What am I doing Wrong?

I must have asked such a silly question that nobody bothered to reply
OR
I must have put the question in the wrong sub-forum. |

Hi, I'm just learning about them too. I think they do break if you move layers around. Apparently there's an option to "update layer comp" somewhere, though.
From my reading, they seem to be more useful for when you've actually finished your main work and you simply want different versions with different combinations of display layers. They don't seem so crash hot at version control during development, when you're moving, deleting and combining lots of stuff.
I don't think it's CS4, because layers comps have been around for a while (though like you I've only just had a look at them).
Sorry I couldn't help more, I'm sure somebody else will have more info. |

It’s a quick way to take a snapshot of the layers that are turned on and turned off.
As Retana said this snapshot occurs when the layer comp is created.
Layers should return to the state they were in when the comp was created.
The things it saves are Layer Visibility, The layer FX applied to the layer, and the position of the stuff painted on that layer.
It does not save layer position in the layers tab, like one above another etc.
It does not save the layer content either, only the content position as described before.
That's probably why its not working for you. Your just expecting to much from it. |

Phew! It worked, thanks Auieos
Yes, I was expecting too much . I still think this feature is useless because you can use layer folders to do the same thing and even better. Say you wanted to create variations of your current work; put everything in a folder, duplicate that folder and alter the duplicated folder. Besides this, folders will preserve everything including layer order and object placement within a layer. |
