I am trying to superimpose bootscreen1a ontop of boot2a and put a picture in the square of the black screen and the erase the black are leaving the picture in the place of the square. How is this done?

Boot skins can be a nightmare to implement, try something like Bootskin it doesn't involve messing with the kernel.
