First, hello.
I'm an airbrusher and found this guy who makes stencils using photoshop and a laser stencil burner to make the best stencils I have ever seen.
He has 2 videos where he is at least kind enough to show people how he is making them.
Now, I'm a NOVICE, but I have been watching as many tutorials as I can.
None show manipulation that is similar to what he is doing.
My MAIN question is how can he draw whatever shapes he wants, then hit a button and make these shapes instantly become "cutouts" or masks?
If I can get that answered, I will play around with that till I something else comes up and I bug you guys again.

He most likely draws the shapes on separate layers and then is ctrl clicking the layer thumbnails for selections or creating new layers using ctrl shift N with the use previous layer as clipping mask option checked. |

First of all, thank you very much for replying. I see a few people on here get no reply, so I'm happy I at least got one.
You've packed your answer so full of info it's gonna take some time to decipher.
Where is the "previous layer clipping mask" option? I'll start with that. |

Hey no worries probably should have made a few more sentences out of it. 
Say if you have a layer with a heart drawn on it.
1. Highlight the layer.
2. Go to menu "Layers > New > Layer"
3. When the dialogue pops up you have the 'use previous layer as clipping mask' option underneath the name field.
4. Check that and create the new layer.
5. Fill the new layer with black (paintbucket tool or shift+F5) |

I can't seem to find an answer to this.
It seems like it would be the simplest tool ever. Let me draw shapes, hit some selection button, and fill those shapes. Not happening.
You can see he is using the brush or pencil, because he has control over width and color of outline. He then is able to mass select all shapes he used with that color. Even lines, and then fill them with an appropriate color to represent the layer he is working.
Check out the dog. HE is just using lines and dots in some layers, and having no trouble selecting all those shapes.
It seems like this would be very very very simple stuff, yet there isn't a tutorial in existance, that I can find anyway, that even comes close to what he is doing. |

Ok i had a look at the video.
It is sped up, not real time.
He uses an action to create the outlines of each layer.
If you notice with the shark just after he arrives at the finished product you see the history window go into overdrive when the action is run.
He is creating separate new layers for the black outlines.
As you can see from his setup he did not start making stencils yesterday and could have different and complex actions assigned to the tablets buttons.
Select all visible pixels on a layer by holding down ctrl + clicking the layer thumbnail, then create a new layer and fill your selection. |
