I understand the principle but PS doesn't respond the same way for me as in tutorials :) I'm a novice so I get stuck.

For example: I have my two pictures open but I don't know how to put them on different layers.

They appear tabbed, so I can only view one at a time, I can only see one layer at a time and I can't drag one pic to the other.

How do I get the two pics to appear side by side?

Is there an absolute idiots guide to doing this somewhere?

In the main menu, Window-Arrange.

You can also click on the tab and drag it into the workspace....that will allow you to drag the window to the side, or anywhere you want, while viewing the tab below.
