Hi guys, I'm new to Photoshop and I want to make a certain effect of which I don't know the term. I want to use a photo of a sunset as background and cover it with a layer which is black in color. Then I want to type text on the black layer but have the font in the color of the background sunset. If you guys have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, please, let me know.

what you want to do is 'fill the text' with an image. But you're going about it wrong. The way you're trying to do it will work..but it's virtually un-editable. In other words; if you want to change the position of the text,or it's size..it would be difficult.
