I'm working on another combination picture, where the boy is added to the outdoor picture of the girl. the boy's right cheek is monotone in its raw form, whereas the girl's face is contrasting.
soi guess i have to either:
1) artistically draw in cheek bone contour, etc, on the boy, or
2) flatten the girl's face in contour/contrast?
not sure how to do better. any ideas?

either overexpose the girls face to better match that of the boy. Duplicate the layer > set blend mode to screen > create a mask > invert the mask or fill with black > paint with white at a low opacity on the mask over the girls face to match detail with the boys. Or burn the details of the boys face by creating a new layer, setting the blend mode to soft light and painting with black over the boys face at a lower opacity.

I would try something akin to this though....
LAB Blown highlights
You could also find your own solution by searching the term blown highlights, Photoshop, LAB etc..
