Go to the library and get a book, don't buy one. Any version will do to learn the basics.
After you learn the basics you'll have a better idea of the direction you want to go with Photoshop, then look for a book. |

When you are ready to buy, Amazon show reader reviews and ratings of their books. They are really helpful (and not just for Photoshop!).
Again, when you're ready, consider getting two books, not one. Get one with big pictures and step by step ideas (e.g Photoshop Classic Effects) and a second more substantial reference type book with meaty information. One for inspiration and the other for detailed information.
