how come when I make a new layer and I make a selection on it, I can't colour its fill? Yet when I duplicate the original background later I can fill my selections in.
One thing that I have noticed is that the original background layer has a white background and so have the duplicates, but when I create a new layer it seems transparent. Has this got something to do with me not being able to get colour in my selections when I make a brand new panel? I don't mind duplicating, but I'm just asking to understand why this is...
Does anybody know?

I don't know the answer to your problem, but I wanted to say that it's better to use a "Solid Color" adjustment layer to add colour. |

thanks for your reply.
Well how about this? what is the best way to put a colour rectangle on one layer, and then put another layer over it with another coloured rectangle which is lower down the page and have both rectangles visible?
I thought it would be just a matter of making the layers transparent which is what happens when I create a new layer and then making a selection and colouring it in, but its not colouring in.
So how would others here do what I want to do?

The easiest and most flexible way is this:
1. Use your rectangular marquee tool to make the first selection (don't make any new layers before this)
2. Choose "Solid Color" from the adjustment layers menu (the little half-black-half-white-circle icon at the bottom of your layers panel)
3. Choose your desired colour (you can easily change it later) and press ok.
Repeat steps 1-3 for the other rectangle. |

Right-click on the layer, and choose "Blending Options". You'll find all sorts of great fun stuff in there (drop shadows etc), and stroke should be the last option in the list. |

These tutorials in these magazines are good, but not for beginners who don't know how to fill in the gaps in what they are asking you to do.
