Can someone please help with this tutorial?

I get lost on step #2. When I hit Ctrl/Cmd+D the whole alpha channel just goes black. I also cannot select levels while in channels. The whole thing is a bit confusing after that point...

I'm trying to learn how to make difficult selections using channels.

Ctrl d is a (windows) shortcut to deselect, you could also from the top menu use Select, Deselect. Then with the alpha channel selected, use ctrl l to bring up the levels adjustment, or Image-Adjustments-Levels.
