I have some web buttons (for Facebook and Twitter) and they have a white background. I would like to apply this image (not a solid color) as the background so instead of the white you'll see this:

Does anyone know precisely how I can do this? I am new to Photoshop so explicit instructions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Zach

Happy to help, need to know/see the buttons to provide it. Most likely will be a layer blending mode exercise.

Sorry for slow reply.

Open up wheat image in photoshop and 'Edit > Define Pattern' and save the wheat pattern. Close wheat image.

Now open up twitter, create a empty layer below the one already there, fill empty layer with wheat 'Edit > Fill > Pattern' select the one you saved prior. Now change top layer blend mode to linear burn.

Face book is same as twitter except used darken blending mode. You can try different modes.

Cool it worked, thanks! To get it finally working I had to drag the image layer above the wheat one, when I created a new later it created it above the existing image layer for some reason and not under it.

One other issue. When I went to open the twitter GIF it said in PS:

I was able to load the image in MSPAINT and save it as a PNG but then it said the transparency layer was removed and it now looks a pale shade of yellow instead of white in the background. I can now load it in PS. What was all that about? In the future is there a way I can get PS to load GIF images which have an alpha layer already? I wish the PS error had been more descriptive! lol

I don't know bro. I saved your gif to my desktop and opened it fine in my cs4 so yeh. The only legit sounding answer i could find is...

some random website wrote:
that was a jpeg renamed in gif, and photoshop checks the file extension and the header before opening the file and since gif is not the header of the gif it gives e that eror...

But like i said it worked fine for me, you should be able to open up a gif file in photoshop with no problems. So good luck with that.
