Okay, i know this is very basic, but I couldn't find it through a simple search on the forums or google. so here we go:

I created a layer in PS just for text. continued work, and wanted to change something on that layer later on. However, when I selected that layer, and the text tool so i could modify the text, PS would always automatically create a new layer instead of letting me change the exisiting layer with text. what am I doing wrong?

Likely you are not selecting the existing text.

Watch for the cursor icon to change. It will have a box around it, when you get close to the existing text the box will disappear. When it does hold down the left mouse button and select the text.

You might have rasterized the layer. If you want to use different tool on the txt layer, a message will pop up saying, "would you like to rasterize the type?" if you click 'ok' then you can't edit the txt any more.

Maybe you hit the mask typing tool instead of the regular typing tool, Cause when I hit mask, I have to start over, and can't go back to change.

Hi vintres,

Try double clicking on the layer thumbnail to select the text. If that doesn't work, it's likely (as Sliptak writes) you've rasterized the layer.

Hope that helps

You should rasterize the layer or you shouldnt make a new layer for it but direct go on the text tool and a new layer for it will appear itself.
