Very new to photoshop. Hoping someone can help me.
Just learnt 2 methods to change depth of field so the subject can stand out. Seemed easy, one method required channel alpha 1 the other using mask layering and "puncturing" out the subject.
Both methods at some point require me to use the brush tool to go over the subject and making sure that black over white is selected.
But the brush doesn't do anything after selecting it?
I am sure this is something very simple and I just haven't selected correct brush or something equally stupid.

I believe you are describing painting on a layer mask to reveal a layer below. You need to select brush, black foreground color and click on a layer mask icon in a layer palette, that should do it.

Thanks, I think the issue was that opacity was high.
