is it possible to create an adjustment layer mask that only affects the layer immediately beneath it?

The only real answer I know of, is to put a blank layer beneath and Merge Into (Ctrl+Shift+E). Obviously this will destroy the point of an adjustment layer. As far as I know there is no merit in locking layers or putting into sets.
