brush tool: when i lay a colour and release the the mouse and start to repaint it paints over the initial colour and makes it darker, what am i doing wrong?

Check the brush settings in the tool bar. Opacity, Flow, Airbrush...

still doesn't change anythig i have been through the settings

As hawkeye suggests I would make sure that the opacity of your brush is not below 100% in the Context Sensitive Menu (top of screen). Also make sure that you do not have wet edges turned on. When all is said and done though it is an additive process.

You could try using a separate layer as a stop gap until you find the answer.
