I am sorry if this thread is posted in the wrong area, but I really need help with a band logo I am working on.
I am very new to PS, so I apologize, I don't know any of the terms and it is really hard to explain my dilemma.
I drew up a logo, scanned it and perfected everything in paint (it is perfectly symmetrical, and just how I want it to look [without fx of course]) and now that I am trying to bevel and emboss it, I cannot get the logo "by itself", cleanly. There is always the background I am dealing with, and when I go to layer style and choose the bevel and emboss option, it creates the effect on the corners of the document itself, but not the logo. Fair enough. When I cut the logo out of its background, the quality of it becomes greatly diminished; edges are missing and pixelated and it just looks awful.
Is there a way to cleanly cut the logo out of the rest of the document without messing up the logo, itself?
If that makes any sense, please let me know if you have any advice.
If you think you might be able to help, but do not understand what it is I am attempting, exactly, please message me, and I will show you examples of what it is I am going for, and what it is that I have come up with so far...
I know there has to be a way to do this, but trial and error has left me stumped for a good two weeks solid now, and I cannot find any tutorials, blogs, etc that cover exactly what I am trying to do.
Thank you, very much, I appreciate the feedback. I am terrible with Illustrator, I tried to use it recently, but it just wasn't happening.
The logo, however, is a great deal more detailed, with a lot more edges and such, but the 3-d quality on that picture was incredible, the chain in particular.
I should give Illustrator another go, I guess. haha
Another thing when you select something have a play with the refine edge menu. Which can be opened by pressing the refine edge button, available when you have the dancing ants. See pic.

very nice! thank you, yeah, i have used the live trace option before, for a friend's band, so i know a little about it, this should definitely help.
also, i can't wait to work with the refine edges option. i bet this is probably what i've needed.
