Moving selection when using pen tool

Hi everyone,

When I'm using the pen tool I can get as far as getting all the way around my subject and making it a selection so that there are marching ants around it. When I go to move my selection (with the pointer) however it just moves the outline of the object and not the object itself. How do I grab it so it moves the object as well?
