Hello,
I wold like to combine two photos,
according to some tutorials, I have to bring the photos to a new file
then use mask layer and then the gradient tool.
For some reason the gradient tool does not do anything, what am I missing?

Off hand I couldn't say. If you post a screenshot of your image and layers palette that would provide more information.

Check your tools panel the color below should be black & White.. if the layer mask is black your gradient should be white... some goes for the opposite..
