Sorry if the subject doesn't make sense. Not sure how to word it or what I am looking to do is called.
Very new to photoshop. Using Cs3.
What I like to do is take photos of my kids and put them in other photos which are mostly of nature and backgrounds and textures.

While I can somewhat cut them out of some of the photos okay when I paste them into the other pics they never seem to look "real" or natrural.

I have tried using mask's also per this link
http://photoshoptips.net/2006/07/25/layer-masks

So how or what do I need to do to make these images look more realistic and natural. ?

Any tutorial links would be great and any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

Masking and or extracting images to be placed in another can range from the simple to the very difficult. This is quite a large task to undergo in some cases and a good working knowledge of masks and even calculations can be most beneficial.

There really is no one tutorial to teach you this as there are many techniques for many situations and you can even use combination of these techniques on one image to achieve the extraction.

The second part of your question about making it look real has PLENTY to do with shadows, color, and tone. It is very difficult to fool the human eye. One can not always put a finger on the problem, but the human brain knows that something is just not right. You will find that adding even the faintest shadows to something or changing the tone and brightness will have a huge effect on the realness of the image.

I am not familiar with and FREE tutorials but I can tell you that Lynda.com is a great source. Specifically Deke McClelland. You can check out his web site and blog but I am not sure how extensive and of his masking tutorials will be as he has quite a few training videos with Lynda.com.

Let me know what you find.

Cheers,
Houston
