Hi, newbie here. I am wondering if anyone out there knows how to change the texture/swatch of a piece of clothing, i.e. shirt. I am familiar with colour changes using hue/saturation but I am wondering if anyone has experience with this sort of thing. Basically I want to keep the shading and wrinkles but change the fabric to something with texture/swatch. Not sure if this is clear? Thanks for any help you can provide!

You should post examples of what you are trying to do.

Great idea! Take a look at this website:
http://www.1154lill.com/lisanet/layout.aspx?bagnbr=28

Here you can click on a fabric swatch and that fabric is applied to the bag on the left. Because the bag shape stays the exact same, I am assuming the fabric is swapped out and its not just a different photograph.

I would like to know how to do this with photoshop.

Thanks

It can be done in PS but it's rather complicated to describe the exact procedure.
You need multiple layers, one with the highlights and shadows another with the just the cutout so the fabric layer below it and show through.
Layer styles and maybe a displacement map to get the proper contours.

Thanks hawkeye, you are the best!

The keyword in your response was "displacement map". I have never used that function before. I did a quick google search and found this:
http://www.layersmagazine.com/displacement-maps-for-graphics-in-photoshop-cs4.html

This is exactly what I need (i think). I will play around with this and dig up some more tutorials on the topic. The fabric's aren't created in illustrator but I am sure some of the same technique applies.

Another question. Is there a quick way to create a layer with only shadows and highlights?

Thanks again!

You last question is what is referred to as a Luminosity mask. See a tutorial here on how to select one. I am affraid there is no easy way to get one, but once you understand them it only takes a few seconds to get to the Highlights and shadows you want.

Cheers,
Houston
