I purchased PS about 7 months ago and was in the same boat as you. I learned by playing and pushing buttons but you have to bring in an image to play with or type some text to play with. Try typing text and you will notice it creates a layer on the right side menu. Double click on that layer and go to bevel. That was the first thing I learned and was amazed at how cool you can make text look.
There are online tutorials that helped me with some techniques too. They are all over the place, just surf and you'll find good ones.
One thing I'm not good at is drawing freehand in PS. If you draw freehand allot and can afford to purchase Illustrator, you can take your freehand sketch and scan it into Illustrator. Then you can hit "Live Trace and it creates a vector image that you can insert back over to PS.
Here's a good example below. I drew an outline of that letter by hand. Then I scanned it with my printer and imported it into Illustrator. I hit "Live Trace" that traced over my line creating a computer generated vector image. Then I exported that line work into Photoshop and then gave it the colors & graphics, etc...

Nicely said. My only other thoughts would be to perhaps bring in your scanned drawing, increase the "blacks" in the levels panel so that you can later select the black and fill it in easier.
Also you can always add color to a drawing by painting overtop of your image and changing the layer style to "Overlay".
Hopefully that helped a little... _________________ FREE PHOTOSHOP TUTORIALS: http://www.redpixelmedia.com
